Winter Hoops Mania

Basketball practice tomorrow will be at James Lee Community Center from 9-11am. Please arrive on time and bring a water bottle. Basketball Practice - Sept. 25th

Basketball practice this Saturday is from 9-11am at the James Lee Community Center (2855-A Annandale Road, Falls Church, VA 22042). Please arrive on time. Basketball chairs will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. All players should be dressed appropriately and bring a water bottle. If you have team equipment (ex. basketball wheelchair) you must bring it to practice on Saturday. All equipment needs to be checked in.

If you are unable to attend practice, please ensure that you let us know ahead of time.

Directly following practice we will be working on creating signs for the car wash (October 23rd). There will also be an open gym session until noon if players would like to use the gym to practice independently or work one-on-one with a coach/ volunteer. Robert has a sign-up sheet for the open gym practice. If you plan on staying for the open gym session, please sign up to work with a particular coach/volunteer or indicate that you would like to just work independently.

Basketball Practice - Sept. 18th

Basketball practice this Saturday is from 9-11am at the James Lee Community Center (2855-A Annandale Road, Falls Church, VA 22042). We are focusing on chair control, ball control (passing/dribbling), and communication skills. Please arrive on time. Basketball chairs will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. All players should be dressed appropriately and bring a water bottle. If you have team equipment (ex. basketball wheelchair) you must bring it to practice on Saturday. All equipment needs to be checked in.


There will be a parent meeting following practice to discuss the season plan, goals for the program, setting up the Fairfax Falcons Booster Fund, and planning for spring/summer sports and activities.
 
We will also hold an open gym session directly following practice from 11-noon.  If players would like to work one-on-one with a coach or practice independently, they are welcome to stay and use the gym.

Basketball Season Starts Soon!

Basketball season is almost here! We hope you all had a wonderful summer and are ready to hit the court. Our first practice will be September 11th from 9-11am at James Lee Community Center (2855-A Annandale Road, Falls Church, VA 22042).

Please complete a registration form and bring it to the first practice. Extra copies will be available at practice if you need one. Players will not be able to participate without a completed registration form. At our first practice 9-9:20 am will be for registration and meeting new players.

Please arrive on time. Basketball chairs will be available on a first come first serve basis. All players should be dressed appropriately and bring a water bottle.  GO FALCONS!!

Summer Break & Volunteers

We will be on summer break until September 11th. The first basketball practice will be held September 11th from 9-11am at James Lee Community Center (2855 Annandale Road Falls Church, VA 22042).

In planning for the upcoming basketball season we are looking for parent volunteers to help out. If you are interested in helping out with one or more of the following areas, please email Lisa or Eric at fairfaxfalcons@gmail.com. As always, your ongoing help and support are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  1. Fundraising - This may include setting up car washes, managing fruit sales, contacting individuals/organizations about donations and support
  2. Outreach/ Advertising - This may include distributing flyers and information about the team and seeking out media opportunities for the team
  3. Assistance during practices - This includes working one-on-one with individuals during drills, helping out with group activities, and helping with equipment checks at the beginning of practice.

Fishing on Saturday

This Saturday (July 24th) we will be fishing again from 8:30-10:30 am at Burke Lake Park (7315 Ox Rd. Fairfax Station, VA 22039). Please enter the park through the Virginia Fish and Game Entrance instead of the main entrance and park in the gravel lot. We meet near the boat launch ramp and then move as a team to a fishing area. The attached map of Burke Lake Park shows the location of the fishing entrance and where we will be fishing.

Please note that Virginia residents ages 16 and older must have a fishing license to participate (http://www3.dgif.virginia.gov/web/licenseagents/).

We will be fishing from platforms and/or the shoreline. If you have equipment to share with the team, please let us know so that we can ensure that all participants have equipment. Possible items include fishing rods, hooks, bobbers, old rags/towels, and camping/beach chairs. The team will provide the bait and have some additional equipment.

Please let us know by Friday morning whether or not you plan on attending practice next Saturday so that we can ensure that there is enough equipment. Thanks!

Practice this Saturday will be held at Lake Accotink Park (7500 Accotink Park Rd. Springfield, VA 22150). We will be geocaching again! Geocaching This Saturday!


This Saturday the Falcons will hold practice at James Lee Community Center (2855 Annandale Road, Falls Church, VA‎ 22042). We will have indoor and outdoor activities. One activity that we will be doing is geocaching. Geocaching is a scavenger hunt using GPS units. If you have a GPS unit that the Falcons can use this Saturday, please let us know. See you there!!

Track & Field Begins!


This Saturday (May 1st) is the first track and field practice of the season. Practice will be held at Lake Braddock Secondary School (9200 Burke Lake Rd. Burke, VA 22015) on the track from 9-11 am. Please bring a water bottle and dress appropriately.

Up to the Challenge


This spring/summer the Falcons will be participating in the President's Challenge Physical Activity and Fitness Awards Program. The program encourages all Americans to be active in their daily lives and promotes physical fitness. Participants log in individual activities and earn points based on the amount of energy burned. As a team, our goal is to reach 2 million points by the end of the summer.

End of Basketball Season Party

Today was the end of basketball season party. We have had a great season. Our athletes continue to improve their basketball skills and are working together as a team. Good job!

To end the season we held a basketball skills competition. The events included:


  • Individual shooting contest

  • Slam Dunk Competition

  • Freestyle Shooting Competition (most creative shot)

  • Master Passer Competition

  • Best Lungs (loudest cheer)

RCE Walk-a-thon Photos

RCE Walk-a-thon

Yesterday seven members of the Fairfax Falcons, along with coaches and parents, participated in the RCE Walk-a-thon beginning in Reston. Falcon althletes used their court chairs and handcycles to push a combined total of over 35 miles on the Washington and Old Dominion bike path. Well done!

Adapted Sports and Recreation Fair

The Fairfax Falcons will have a booth and a demonstration area at the Fairfax County Adapted Sports and Recreation Travel Fair on March 20th at Key Middle School from 1:30-4:00pm. Adapted sports teams and groups from Fairfax, Arlington, and Loudoun counties and Alexandria City will be present. Come out and learn more about our team!

Fruit Sale Success

Well done, Falcons! You did a phenomenal job selling fruit to raise money for the team. Thank you to all of the parents and athletes who helped out. A special thanks to Mrs. Strasel for all of her hard work organizing the fruit sale.

Congratulations to Zach S. and Gary for being the top sellers!

The fruit will be delivered the week of March 8. We will need volunteers to help pick up the fruit and bring it to practice. Thanks again for all of your hard work!

National Spinal Cord Injury Association Resource

The Fairfax Falcons are now listed on the National Spinal Cord Injury Association's (NSCIA) website in the Virginia State Resources section. The NSCIA is the oldest and largest civilian organization in the United States dedicated to improving the quality of life for Americans living with spinal cord injury and disease.

Good Job, Falcons!

Well done, Falcons! The Falcons participated in the Bennett Blazers Wheelchair Basketball tournament this past weekend in Baltimore, Maryland. Our athletes did a great job and pushed hard! Come Cheer Us On!

The Falcons will be participating in a wheelchair basketball tournament this weekend hosted by the Bennett Blazers in Baltimore, Maryland. Come out to cheer on the team! All games will take place at the Bennett Institute gymnasium at 3835 Greenspring Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland.
We will be playing games on Saturday and Sunday.

** In May of 2009 the Fairfax Falcons coaches were selected for a Distinguished Colleague Award from the Fairfax County Department of Community and Recreation Services (CRS). The Distinguished Colleague Award is presented to organizations and individuals outside of CRS who have helped further the mission of CRS.

** The Fairfax County Volunteer Gold Star Award was presented to two of the Falcon coaches.

Falcons in the News:

The Fairfax Falcons were featured in a local newspaper, the Springfield Connection, in October 2008. Girl Scout Troop 8154 volunteered for several weeks at basketball practices and raised money to purchase equipment for the team. Click here to read more about it.

In April 2008, Alex, an athlete on the Falcons team, was interviewed by NBC29 while participating in the Mid-Atlantic Wheelchair Games in Fishersville, Virginia. Click here to read the article.

Citrus Anyone?





The team is selling Valencia Oranges and Indian River Red Grapefruit for our Spring 2010 fundraiser.

The fruit comes in 20 and 40 lb. boxes, and you can order either fruit singly or in a combination of both, in either size box.

All 20 lb. boxes are $22.00, the 40 lb. boxes are $32.00, payable upon ordering OR delivery in mid-March.

The Fairfax Falcons are raising money for a trailer to transport our basketball wheelchairs to practices and tournaments. Other proceeds may fund additional sport wheelchairs, uniforms, equipment, and participation in regional tournaments.
